Volunteers
Having a reliable, enthusiastic and competent team of volunteers is the backbone of our ferry service – in fact it couldn’t operate without it!
We have a team of nearly 40 volunteers who run the ferry on a rota basis, committing to work about half a day every three weekends throughout the summer months. We aim to keep the rota flexible enough to allow volunteers to increase or decrease their commitment as personal circumstances change. Although volunteers generously give their time freely, we also make a commitment to them, by covering the considerable costs of training and personal kit.
The ferry always operates with two crew, with at least one of them holding a Royal Yacht Association (RYA) qualification or the equivalent of many years of boating experience.
We encourage those with little or no boating experience to become our crew members, working alongside the skipper with a view to developing their skills and perhaps become skippers further down the line.
As you would expect, there is a lot of work goes on in the background when running a community project, especially when building to project up to become financial sustainable in the first few years. So having volunteers who are competent in areas such as managing the volunteers’ rota, keeping us visible on social media, publicity and fund raising is equally important to us.
Although there may be waiting lists for some of our voluntary roles, if you would like to be involved in supporting our community ferry project, please get in touch by email or pop down to the ferry one weekend to meet us and have a chat.
